Club history
Sale Football Club was founded in 1861 by sportsmen drawn mainly from Sale Cricket Club and is the fifth-oldest surviving rugby union club in the world.
In 1865 Sale members compiled what is reputed to be the world's oldest surviving rugby rule book - a minute book still held by the club.
Sale FC bought its Heywood Road ground in 1905 and has played there ever since.
The women's senior side carries the name Sale FC 1861 to honour the original Sale club founded in that year - distinct from the professional Sale Sharks who spun out of Sale FC in 1997.
Recent seasons
Sit 2nd in Women's Championship 1 North in 2025-26 with 76 points level with Cheltenham Tigers.
Previously competed in Championship North 2 at the third tier of women's English rugby.
